Peak nights fail in two ways: no tables for people who showed up, or tables held for people who never arrive. Booking software is not about becoming a hotel. It is about visibility — which tables are promised, which are free, and when a slot expires.
When bookings help most
- Friday and Saturday groups of four who will leave if they wait 40 minutes.
- Weekday coaching or practice slots that would otherwise stay empty.
- League nights where tables must be blocked in advance.
Rules that keep the floor fair
Use a hold window (for example 15 minutes), take a name and phone, and release no-shows automatically. Staff should see bookings next to live sessions so they do not double-sell Table 3.
Bookings plus walk-ins
Keep some tables unreserved for walk-ins if that is your neighborhood trade. The software should show a mix, not force 100% reservations. Combined with idle-hour tactics, bookings become a weekday fill tool, not only a Saturday gate.
